Plastic, also known as synthetic material, is a synthetic material consisting mainly of polymers. Plastics are made from natural raw materials such as crude oil, natural gas or coal and are produced by chemical processes such as polymerisation or polycondensation.

Thermosetting plastics
- Hard and closely cross-linked in all directions
- Temperature-resistant, non-deformable, non-meltable and insoluble
- Hard and brittle at normal temperatures
Elastomers
- Spatially cross-linked plastics, swellable and rubber-elastic
- Can be stretched to at least twice their length and return to their original state when released (rubber elasticity9
